Question: Help, grade 10 math quadratic functions, parabolas?
Find a and k so that the given points lie on the parabola.
y=a(x-1)^2+k; (2,6) (3,12)
Answer: Just substitute the points into the equation.
Point 1:
6 = a(2-1)^2 + k;
this simplifies to:
6 = a + k. (*)
Point 2:
12 = a(3-1)^2 + k;
12 = 4a + k. (**)
We now have two linear equations and two unknowns. Subtract equation (*) from equation (**):
6 = 3a;
or a = 2.
Therefore. k = 6 – 2 = 4 (from equation (*)).
