67 countries participated in the 1994 Winter Olympics. If 14 won gold, 12 won gold and sliver, 11 won gold and bronze, 17 won silver, 14 won bronze and silver, 18 won bronze and 10 won gold, silver, and bronze.
a. how many countries won gold but not silver or bronze?
b. how many countries won gold and silver but not bronze?
c. how many countries did not win any metals?
Answer: The key is to eliminate the double counting.
10 GSB
12 GS (10 included in GSB, so 2 GS only)
11 GB (10 included in GSB, so 1 GB only)
14 G (10 included in GSB, 2 in GS, 1 in GB, so 1 G only)
14 SB (10 included in GSB, so 4 SB only
17 S (10 included in GSB, 2 in GS, 4 in SB, so 1 S only
18 B (10 included in GSB, 1 in GB, 4 in SB, so 3 B only)
so a non-double-count table looks like:
10 GSB
2 GS
1 GB
1 G
4 SB
1 S
3 B
a) 1
b) 2
c) 67 – 22 = 45
