Logic – Calculus of Sentences

This section of Math Help online deals with Logic or the Algebra of Logic (also called calculus of sentences). This part of logic has more use in everyday lives and speeches than other types of logic. This part of logic is everywhere and it is fundamental to your thought process.

The concept of this logic or Algebra of logic is all about using algebraic tools to decipher if a sentence is true or false. When in doubt if something is true or false in life, use this logic tool and you will know that logically it is true or logically it is false. Once you have mastered this logic technique, you will no longer have to ask anyone else if something is true or false, you will be able to use your logic to figure it out for yourself.

Sentences

Sentences are any expressions that can be labeled either true or false. Example of sentences are:

  • ” it is windy where I am standing “
  • ” My name is Peter “
  • ” 2 + 2 = 4 “

Examples of expressions that cannot be assigned true or false are:

  • ” I will probably be thinner if I exercise “
  • ” It will rain on Wednesday, one month from now “
  • ” What I Am saying right now is a lie “

Sentences can be combined to form new sentences

Sentences can be combined to form new sentences by using the words, AND, OR, NOT, and IF – THEN.

For example, the sentences:

  • ” I am tired. “
  • ” Joanne is running. “

can be combined to form

  • I am tired and Joanne is running.
  • I am tired or Joanne is running.
  • I am not tired.
  • If I am tired then Joanne is running.
