Question: Please HELP!! with this math problem… its about conics.. in my online algebra II class and i dont understand?
A mirror with a parabolic cross section is used to collect sunlight on a pipe located at the focus of the mirror. The pipe is located 9 inches from the vertex of the mirror. write an equation of a parabola that models the cross section of the mirror. Assume that the parabola opens upward???
Answer: The equation of the parabola is x^2 = 4ay, where a = distance of the focus from the vertex
=> reqd. eqn. of the parabola is
x^2 = 4 * (9) y
=> x^2 = 36y.
